learn about digital photography

people interested in photography learn about digital photography on the internet. It doesn’t matter if you have never touched a camera before or have already taken a few hundred thousand photographs: as long as you want to learn, you can, and as long as you are human, you can get more skilled than you already are.

Most of the information about how to learn digital photography on the internet can be separated in two categories: one that focuses on the form, and the other on the content of the photography. The form part is focusing on the camera, the physical understanding of it, and the content part is focusing on the composition of the photograph itself, and the spirit of the photograph.

How to learn about digital photography: the physical part

You don’t need to perfectly know your camera to take photographs, even good photographs, but it sure helps a lot. A camera is quite complex. Understanding the different parts, their particular effects and all options and modes of the camera is important in order to comprehend the form part of photography. As I just said, you don’t need to understand it all to take beautiful pictures, but knowing it may make the difference between a nice photograph of a sunset and a tremendous one that will change people’s day.

Usually, you can find this information in the manual that comes with your camera. If you have lost it, if you bought a second-hand one, or if you just don’t want to read it because it is too small and black and white, don’t panic: Internet has it all, on videos, interactive media, colorful websites, etc.

Internet can teach you everything you want to learn about digital photography. By doing the right search, you will find all you need to know about the lens, the zoom, the number of pixels, the effects of high or low ISO, the difference between RAW and JPEG, how to balance whites, how to hold the camera, how to use a tripod, all about effects, when and how to use flash, shooting mode, and, for after the photo is taken, all you can possibly want to know about Photoshop or editing the photograph.

The principle is simple: make a specific search with specific keywords, read, watch videos and subscribe to newsletters, all with your camera in hands. It won’t be long before you are proud of what you can accomplish.

How to learn about digital photography: the image conception part

This is my favorite part of the job. The composition of the photograph, the feeling it brings, its substance. To learn how to communicate through photography, without even writing one word. It is harder to learn to communicate exactly what we want than to simply use a camera, but it is absolutely worth the effort. Whether you want to change the world for the better, to sell a product or just to share a pleasant moment, communicating an emotion through a photograph is what makes it so impressive.

Before communicating a feeling, one should know a little bit about composition. There are a few rules or general tips about the composition of an image, but of course rules are made to be broken. You may want to read a little bit about image composition, the rule of thirds, how to place elements so that the eye naturally goes where you want it to go. Of course, the subject, person, animal, sunset, place or situation you want to capture will determine a lot of the emotion that the picture will communicate. But the framing, the light, the focus, and many form elements do influence a lot. This is where we see mostly the difference between a great, a good and a bad photographer.

The feeling part of a photograph is very important. It is quite impossible to teach with words or intellectually. It is possible to develop by being touched by photographs and seeking to reproduce this feeling or another on our own photographs. But it doesn’t really have an academy part.

As always, experimentation is the best way to learn about digital photography. Read, look, watch, feel, be inspired, and practice. Taking a lot of photographs and looking at them afterwards is the best way to develop your skills of photography.

How to learn about digital photography: the budget part

Many courses are expensive. Most of them, but not all, are worth the price. From a few dollars to a few hundreds, you can find about anything you want. Make sure you choose well, but most of the time, you will be satisfied by great quality courses and useful tips which will help you a lot to go on by yourself.

But if ever you don’t want to spend a penny on the case, it is still possible to learn a lot, if not all what you can pay for. But it will be harder and longer. By reading a lot, subscribing to different newsletters, getting a tip here and another there, and practicing on your own, you are sure to get better as time passes. Share your photographs with your friends, get their comments, read more, take at least a few pictures every day, and once more, ask internet: it knows almost everything! In no time, photography will have no secrets for you!

And still, for those who want to go deeper and deeper, there will always be place for amelioration. The world of photography is vast…

Photography has never been easier than today! To learn about digital photography on the internet is easy, affordable, accessible, more than it has ever been.
